Show you care - think pink

Dear all

October is the international month in the fight against Breast Cancer and we want to mark that with a lot of publicity and events which in co-operation with our readers and advertisers hopefully will result in a big economical contribution to the breast cancer research in Málaga province.

Now why have we chosen Breast Cancer when there are so many other types of cancers that are painful and terrible for both patients and their families?

Because Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in Spain – and the number of cases are growing at an alarming rate. About 16.000 women every year are diagnosed with Breast Cancer and the cancer affects 1 in 8 women. Breast Cancer is affecting on a broad scale. It is affecting young and old, thick and thin, light and dark women, happy and angry women + all those in between. In fact are the women who are affected getting younger and younger and in ever increasing numbers. It is not a which normally hits the elderly such as cancer in the throat or prostate cancer. It is also not because we feel more sorry for the breast cancer patients than all other cancer patients. We have chosen Breast Cancer because it is the biggest single problem and a huge expense to society that we have chosen to support it.

For the affected women it is often the start of a lonely trip with fear, pain and difficult treatments and the lowering of the death rate is very very slow.

We have an increasing number of elderly and that keep the death rate figures high and the older we are the greater the risk of breast cancer. But age is not the only explanation to the high death rate and not the whole reason for the illness. Researchers know that the risk of getting breast cancer increases with a lot of facts such as number of child births, alcohol intake, night shifts, hormone replacement during the menopause and lack of physical activity. But the real cause for the illness has not been found in spite of decades of research.

Just think of the fact that 1 out of 8 women in Spain gets affected by breast cancer. It is rather a lot, isn’t it? It is mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters, grannies, colleagues and friends. Every eights of all the women you know will according to the statistics be affected by breast cancer.

It is a fact though, that the earlier the cancer is discovered the greater th chance of survival. It is therefore imperative that Spain has a screening programme that covers the whole country for all women between 50 and 70 years old. That preventative steps are being organized so children in schools are taught how to get a healthy lifestyle. That sufficient money are placed so researchers in peace can try to find the key to the riddle about why women get breast cancer, how to avoid it and not least how to cure the illness.

A pink month
Our ”pink” project group (consisting of Jette and Mugge from Norbom Marketing, Torben from Radio Solymar, Susan from Boutique Daniella, Dan from Golf & Vinos, Flemming from CasaUna and yours truly) have spent a lot of time investigating which is the best way to help here in the Málaga province. A meeting with the AECC-department in Fuengirola resulted in a promise to donate the first 6.8000 euros we receive to a machine which can relieve the side-effects that lympf glands are causing after a breast cancer operation, which is severe swelling of the arms, pain etc.

Luckily it turnes out that Hospital Clinico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria in Málaga has got a research team that is concentration on finding a method which can direct and aim the treatment of each individual women.

That was how we found a receiver of the amount collected that exceeds the 6.800 euros.

All over the world it is estimated that 4.4 women are affected with breast cancer this very minute.

We are asking all breast cancer conscious women and their husbands, brothers, colleagues and neighbours to help with the collection which is taking place from the 1st to the 31st October 2007.

We have already planned Pink Cup – a big golf tournament 28th October on Marbella Golf & Country Club (who has donated the use of the golf course and the buggies that day) and Pink Walkathon along Paseo Maritomo in Fuengirola on Saturday 27th October. The arrangements are culminating 31st October in a big party where we hopefully will be able to hand over a huge cheque to AECC. Read mor about the arrangements on our website www.norrbom.com/pink - that will be updated as the events unfoulds.

How can you help?
You can help by taking part in the mentioned events. The money from the green-fee on the golf-day, the starting fee to the walkathon etc is going straight to the Pink-project. If you have a compane, a shop, a restaurant or other business then suggest different ways og supporting Pink Project.

You can sell pink bows, which are the symbol of the month for breast cancer, and collect money from your customers in the collection boxes you can also donate bigger amounts (read about donations, collection boxes, tax excemptions www.norrbom.com/pink ) You might want to donate ie 1 euro for every new customer in October , give the tips of the month to the course, arrange lectures, sell “marked up” pink flowers, arrange boot sales, auctions, competitions, check your retailers if they have created specially products for the breast cancer month – the sky is the limit!!

Regardless of what you do and how much money you are collecting, you contribution is invaluable for the research, and most important of all it is a great help to the breast cancer patients and their friends and family. Advitise your donation idea in your October adverts to appeal for your customers help.

What is in it for you?
First and foremost is the joy of helping out but also the great Pink-events, meeting new people, new business relations, the knowledge, an image as a caring company and of course a big “thank you” from AECC for helping them a step further forward in the fight against breast cancer in Spain – and a thank you for the help by turning the attention to the illness which is the only way we can prevent it.

We are opening the campaign on the 1st October 2007, so hurry up and tell us about your ideas and actions in connection with this project.

Kind regards
